GC 289: SPECIAL TOPICS - LETTERPRESS
Thursday Nights, 5-9:50pm, Open to all ages
January 15 - May 21, 2009
Catalog Description: Learn the traditional art of letterpress printing. Today many designers are returning to the craft of letterpress– printing from metal and wooden type and photopolymer plates–as a unique option to offset printing. Letterpress offers a tactile quality and nostalgic feel that can’t be achieved with any other technique.

The Saddleback letterpress studio specializes in large wood type with three sign presses. Instruction will be based primarily on wood type printing and hand-inking with additional emphasis on typography, design and an introduction to book forms.

“Steve Miller, head of the University of Alabama’s book arts program, is a master of the podcast. In this rich, reflective audio piece, Steve relates his own journey into the world of handset letterpress printing and making books by hand. He talks about what it was like to jury the thousands of entries received by Lark for 500 Handmade Books, which he calls “a feast for the eyes.” Steve describes the range of work that was seen, and spots some emerging influences in contemporary book making practice.”

Christians in the Visual Arts is proud to offer Highly Favored: Contemporary Images of the Virgin Mary, a visual exploration of the mother of Jesus. Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox traditions all have images of this young Jewish woman who was declared by the archangel Gabriel to be “highly favored” in God’s sight. Who exactly is Mary? How can we recover a larger sense of her meaning through the works of contemporary artists from the Christian traditions and the reflections of contemporary thinkers from these traditions?

December 1, 2006 - January 17, 2007

An all-media, juried exhibit of work created using repeated processes or patterns. The rhythm of simple, repetitive gestures are used, often unconsciously, by many artists to escape the fast and furious world that we sometimes find ourselves consumed with. For some, this provides calm and order to an otherwise chaotic existence. The SSAC Visual Arts Committee is seeking work that emulates this kind of quest for solace. This show will be juried by New York artist Jane Moffitt, herself an artist who works in this obsessive style.
